My New Heirloom

Today has been pretty special for me as I picked up a new piece of heirloom jewellery from Andrew Mazzone Jewellers.  I’m not ashamed to say that I cried tears of joy either. Here’s the story……

A few years ago I very sadly lost my beautiful Mum. Words can’t describe how much I miss her.  She had been married to my Dad for 35 years and we’d only recently celebrated their milestone anniversary before she fell really sick.

Mum and Dad were married on 3rd January ’76 and when I was just 6 months old.  Their wedding wasn’t an elaborate affair by any stretch. I was too young to remember however there are plenty of photos of my Mum looking stunning in a floral maxi dress and hat and my Dad as usual looking dapper in a classic ’70’s suit.

Many years later and after a whole load of nagging, while on holiday in Greece my Dad finally bought her an engagement ring and so her plain gold band was remodelled to fit. I remember just how excited she was about this new beautiful solitaire that she deserved so much.

In 2013 my Dad came over from the UK to visit us and he gave me her wedding band to keep.  It was a beautiful and emotional gift to receive and my immediate thoughts were that I didn’t want it sitting in a box for years and years just gathering dust.

I decided pretty quickly that I wanted to turn it into a piece of jewellery that I can wear every day so I took it to Andrew Mazzone jewellers in the City. Andrew and his team worked their magic and today I picked up this stunning pendant. I bubbled tears of joy and I’m beyond excited about it. It’s simply perfect!!

I photographed it on an old book representing my parent’s story.

In years to come, I will gift this to my Daughter so that she can carry on enjoying this family heirloom for generations to come.

HUGE thanks to Andrew Mazzone for sympathetically rejeuvenating this special piece of family jewellery. xx

Essentials For Women

I’ve been wanting to support a locally based charity for a while now and stumbled across Essentials For Women on facebook recently.  It really struck a chord with me and I immediately contacted them to find out more.

Here’s what Amy, who is one of the founders has to say…..

Essentials 4 Women SA is run by Kelly & I, two Southern Adelaide Mums, and to date this kind of donation campaign has never been done in South Australia before. People do donate generously to various charities and campaigns but for some reason the thought of sanitary items never crosses their minds. I assume this because they don’t realise these bare necessities are not provided to women for free, like razors or condoms are to blokes.

Our first drive in April/May this year generated over 10,000 donated items – which was beyond our wildest expectations! We had drop-off points from the Barossa Valley down to Goolwa.

Mission Statement

For disadvantaged women, Essentials 4 Women SA aims to provide the basic, but costly, items for feminine hygiene including sanitary products and underwear. Our passion for helping women promises to help empower and enhance the wellbeing and dignity for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

Core Principles

At Essentials 4 Women SA we believe that:

  • Every women has the right to access sanitary products every month;
  • Essential toiletry items are exactly that – essential – not a luxury, that every woman should be able to access;
  • By making these items accessible to women in need, their dignity as a woman is enhanced.

Their long term goal is to get to a point in South Australia were vulnerable women no longer need to menstruate without dignity and to resort to disturbing decisions such a making the choice of either buying food or buying essential sanitary items.

The next donation drive is from 13 September – 17 October and obviously Amy and Kelly are keen to smash the previous number of donations. They had no idea how many donations they would receive so they tried to keep the list of beneficiaries quite narrow to homeless and domestic violence shelters but they’ve already have committed to providing donations to various youth and refugee services from the next campaign.

The idea of supplying such a basic need to women, who would otherwise go without, really has hit a chord with me. I’m fairly sure most women have been caught unawares by their period and had to create makeshift pads and the thought of having to do that most of the time is truly quite confronting.

For this reason, Love Cherish Adore is supporting Essentials 4 Women with their next donation drive by giving them a drop off point at the Ayers House fair this coming September 20th.

 You’re invited to support by bringing along a donation and have a chat to these lovely ladies about this wonderful charity on 20th September at Ayers House.

LCA’s UK Travels

It’s been 3 years since I’ve been back to the UK to see friends and family.  The fastest 3 years of my life I would say so it was definitely time to go back and visit.

I spent most of my time during my travels in Church Lench which is about 12 miles from Worcester (they still make Worcester Sauce there you know!) and Stratford on Avon which is of course the famous birthplace of Shakespeare.

Church Lench is a village within a cluster of other villages and hamlets called ‘The Lenches’ overlooking the Malvern Hills and boasts beautiful British country scenery.

I took a few walks while I was back, passing through memorable places such as the local church where we got married. The countryside vista was stunning with the hedgerows awash with local wild flowers and cute country cottages.

Taking about flowers, I also visited a flower farm nearby which provided the perfect backdrop to capture an up to date picture of my cute little Niece.

During my time away we also organised a fundraiser for St Richards Hospice in memory of my lovely Mum.  With thanks to friends, family and the support of the local community, over 100 people attended and we raised almost $4000 which was incredible!

We also headed south for a family trip down south to Bridport in Dorset and spent a lovely day in Lyme Regis for some traditional English seaside fun including lashings of ice cream and sand castle making.

My trip whizzed by far too quickly and I’m now back to work putting together the final touches to the last 2 fairs at Chapel Hill on 30th August and Ayers House on 20th September. I really look forward to seeing you there!
